    Driveway Extensions

Wider aprons, parking pads, and turnarounds matched to your existing driveway and built for Michigan winters.

Home & Hardscape designs and installs driveway extensions for homeowners throughout Metro Detroit and Southeast Michigan. Whether you need more parking, a wider apron, or a full turnaround, we build extensions that match your existing driveway and hold up through Michigan winters.

    What Is a Driveway Extension?

A driveway extension adds usable paved or hardscaped area to your existing driveway. Common reasons homeowners extend their driveway include adding a second parking lane, widening a narrow apron at the street, creating a parking pad for a boat or RV, adding a turnaround area, or connecting the driveway to a side-entry garage or detached garage.

A well-built extension looks like it was always part of the original driveway and handles the same load and weather conditions.

    Materials

    Driveway Extension Materials

    Concrete Pavers

The most popular choice for driveway extensions in Metro Detroit. Pavers can be matched closely to existing paver driveways, and even when extending a concrete driveway, pavers create a clean visual border that looks intentional. They handle heavy vehicle loads well and can be repaired section by section if needed.

    Poured Concrete

Best when matching an existing poured concrete driveway. A poured extension is seamless in appearance when done correctly. Requires control joints to manage cracking. In Michigan, concrete driveways and extensions should be air-entrained to handle freeze-thaw.

    Asphalt

A cost-effective option, particularly for larger extensions or rural properties. Asphalt extensions can connect to either an existing asphalt or concrete driveway. Requires sealing every few years to maintain appearance and durability.

    Gravel

The most affordable option for overflow parking or RV/boat pads that don't need a finished appearance. Gravel extensions require a proper base and edging to stay contained. Not ideal for main driveways but practical for secondary parking areas.

    Project Types

    Common Driveway Extensions We Build

Widening A Single-Car Driveway To Two Cars

One of the most common requests. We extend one or both sides of the driveway to create side-by-side parking. Width depends on your lot and setback requirements.

    Adding A Parking Pad

A dedicated paved area off the side of the driveway for a third vehicle, boat, RV, or trailer. Usually built at the same grade as the driveway with a clean edge transition.

    Widening The Apron

The apron is the section of driveway between the street and the sidewalk. Widening it makes pulling in and out easier and is one of the simpler extensions to build.

    Turnaround Or Hammerhead

A widened area at the end of a long driveway that allows vehicles to turn around without backing out to the street. Common on properties with long driveways or limited street visibility.

Connecting To A Side Or Detached Garage

Extending the driveway to reach a side-entry garage or a detached garage at the rear of the property. Requires planning for grade changes and drainage.

    Pricing

How Much Does A Driveway Extension Cost?

Driveway extension costs in Metro Detroit typically range from $8 to $25 per square foot depending on material and site conditions.

    10×20 Parking Pad

    $1,600 – $5,000

200 sq ft pad, depending on material.

    40-ft Driveway Widening

    $3,000 – $8,000

    Single-side widening along a 40-foot run.

    What Affects The Price

    • Material — Gravel is least expensive; pavers and concrete cost more.

    • Size — More square footage means more material and base prep.

    • Grade changes — Sloped driveways require more excavation and grading.

    • Drainage — Extensions that change water flow may require a catch basin or channel drain.

    • Demolition — Removing existing landscaping, edging, or old pavement adds cost.

    • Permits — Some municipalities require permits for driveway work near the street.
